The penultimate round of this year’s 1:10 off-road National series headed to the North West of the country and the Southport club. Located just a stone’s throw from the sea, recent years has seen mixed weather conditions and 2010 was no different
Southport is a firm favourite on the calendar not just for the racers but also families alike. Backing onto a campsite and within walking distance of the beach, town centre and its tourist attractions, for many the long trip is well worth it.
Saturday
Starting off damp, the conditions through the day improved throughout qualifying as the drivers got to grips with the track conditions and decisions over tyres.
Danny McGee’s Atomic Carbon/Losi took the first and fourth round wins and would take pole for the A finals whilst Schumacher team mates Tom Cockerill and Simon Moss shared the two other rounds. Simon would line up second for the A final with the ever-consistent Lee Martin in third.
The first two A finals though were all about Danny McGee as he simply drove away from the field to take comfortable wins and seal the victory in double quick time. Lee Martin driving his Tamiya and one of potential championship winners for 2WD would end up taking second overall head of Schumacher’s Grant Williams in third.
Sunday
The weather was nice again to play its part in the proceedings as the forecasted rain arrived before practice began and it continued to pour well into qualifying. Like yesterday, things did improve but this meant the drivers had to chase the set-up and track conditions.
Tom Cockerill’s Schumacher took pole position for the A finals ahead of Lee Martin’s Tamiya and the Yokomo of Tom Yardy as all three took wins in the qualification rounds.
The overall result though would be decided after two legs when Tom Cockerill won the first and second runs. Lee Martin took the third leg victory from Danny McGee’s Losi and as a result, these two would complete the podium in second and third respectively.
Next Time
The final round takes place at Stotfold and with the 2WD championship still up for grabs, we are looking at a great end to the 2010 series.
