The first round of Hungarian Championship took place on 17 April in Pécs in the south of Hungary. In the 1:8 scale class, Velox V8 drivers finished on podium as Gábor Körmendi took first place while Zoltan Jáger finished in third. The 30 minute final was controlled by Gábor. Starting from TQ, he managed to extend his lead to one lap gap in front of Serpent driver Tibor Bognár after nine minutes. But at the second fuel stop, his engine stopped and he dropped back to third place. After rejoining, he fought back to the top within five minutes and nobody could stop him to winning the race. Tibor was running close to him during the whole final, but he completely lost his chance since his engine stopped four minutes before the end finishing four laps down on second place. This time Zoltan couldn’t take part in the battle for first place, but he certainly earned some important championship points on third place. The weekend’s lap record of 11.967 belonged to Gábor Körmendi.
The biggest battle for the podium was expected in 200mm class. The competition of brands – if you can say so – went to Shepherd this weekend, since four Velox V10 were qualified for the final. Your best bet for this was last year’s Hungarian national champion Simon Ciudan and in the end it turned out to be the right expectation. There was fierce battle for the first place from the start of the race, but two the potential winners Gergely Csek (Serpent) and Team Orion driver László Kiss-Orbán dropped out early with technical issues due to a racing accident. The fight for the gold medal after this was clearly between Simon and Italian Eugenio Carlevaro. Simon was leading for most of the final, but because of different race tactics he needed to make one more fuel stop two minutes before the end, so he had to give up his lead and finished six seconds behind the Eugenio. Hungarian Team Shepherd driver Krisztian Gulyás finished in fourth in front of his team mate Zsolt Sipos with distributor Tamás Heged’s in seventh completing the good team result with four Velox V10 on the first seven places.
