CORC First Race Meeting
Sunday 10 July saw the very first meeting at CORC in Crewe, Cheshire. Some 22 drivers from across the northern region turned up to have a meeting with Kev Davies and his new track and to give some valuable feedback on what they thought of it and what needs changing, etc. The meeting went very well with some good times posted by quite a few drivers. As soon as the drivers were getting to grips with the layout all drivers times were tumbling. The format was half an hour of open practice, then three seven-minute heats with a 20-minute B final and a 30-minutre A final.
In the B final we saw some fantastic racing with Jamie Skelton taking an early and massive lead with Dean Haynes not that far behind in second for most of the race. After Jamie’s pit stop at the ten-minute-mark, his performance seemed to tail off and after a catalogue of mistakes he handed the lead to Dean. The final positions were:
1. Dean Haynes – Losi
2. Jon Clay – Associated (truggy)
3. John Wells – Losi,
4. Jamie Skelton – Mugen
The A final saw the fast boys out to play with Colin Brennan lining up on pole, Wayne Eley in second, Mark Redmond in a strong third and club chairman Kev Davies hot on their heels in fourth. After the inevitable first corner shenanigans, Wayne had a massive lead over Mark, with Kev in third and Colin in fourth and all three buggy drivers piling on the pressure to Wayne and his Losi truggy. Wayne drove a master class of a race and only needing to be marshalled twice in a 30-minute final whereas the chasing buggies all had issues with cuts or tumbles that cost them big time. The final positions were:
1. Wayne Eley – Losi (truggy)
2. Steve Jones – Losi (truggy)
3. Jon Clay – Associated (truggy)
The winner of the first A final at CORC had this to say about the track. “Kev, you and your crew should be proud of what you have built. I found the track a pleasure to drive and a challenge. yes it is a little bumpy but we are racing off road aren’t we? I wouldn’t have changed anything on the track (maybe the pit exit) but it’s nice to see you have listened to peoples thoughts and taken action. The jumps are spot on and very very satisfying when you get them right, especially the last one before the pit straight (my favourite jump on any track ever). You also need to have a look at some of the blind spots when landing some of the jumps. All in all Kev, I really like the track and will be joining the club as soon as I can.
So from all at CORC a massive thank you for attending the shakedown meeting and also even bigger thanks for your ever valuable feedback!
