At Racer, we are very lucky to have a great relationship with The Airbrush Company, and we have even attended one of their courses to help us get an idea of what to do when it comes to airbrushing. The most recent delivery from them was this Neo for Iwata TRN2 airbrush to try. As the name suggests, the airbrush is built by Iwata under the Neo branding, and is designed to work with low air pressures, making it ideal if you only have a small compressor such as the Neo Compact Air that we have here in the office.
The version sent to us was the 0.5 side feed version which is more suitable for spraying RC car bodies although many paints for RC airbrushing will probably need a slightly higher pressure compressor than the Neo Compact. We used it on one of our scale truck models to touch up some external paint using some thinned down Tamiya acrylics. The dual action pistol grip control makes airbrushing a real joy as both air and paint supply are done in one action rather than the push down and pull back of a standard trigger airbrush, which gives you a much more natural and comfortable feel for RC racers. This is also really useful if you have huge areas of bodywork to cover as this brush can easily paint a 0.5mm spray pattern all the way up to 38mm with one nozzle.
The TRN2 also has optional paint cup sizes of 7ml and 14ml that are gravity fed side mount cups. But it also comes with 1oz big mouth bottle, which again is really handy to have when it comes to those big jobs requiring large areas of covering. Spare big mouth bottles are available so you can keep your favourite colour mixes at hand when you want to spray. And if you keep a spare one full of airbrush cleaner you can literally swap colours in seconds.
If you have never tried airbrushing before we strongly suggest you give it a go. And with an RRP of £130 (not including a compressor) it will pay for itself over time compared to the cost of aerosol paint cans. For more information head on over to The Airbrush Company website – link below.
