The final round of the BRCA Off-Road Nationals for 2013 were hosted by Oswestry Radio Car Club in the depths of Shropshire. Different to previous venues this year, Oswestry is an old school grass track and in the 2WD event the weather was to play a part yet again. Intermittent rain during the day kept the track wet, but there was never enough to make it muddy and it stayed amazingly consistent for what was a title decider.
It was Darren Bloomfield (TLR) who took the pole position ahead of champion elect Neil Cragg (Associated/Centro). Lee Martin (Tamiya) was in third on the grid and needed to win the meeting to deny Neil the title. In the end no-one could challenge Darren as he romped on to take the win as Kevin Lee (Kyosho) came from fourth on the grid for second overall ahead of Simon Moss (Schumacher) in third. Lee won the final leg, but it was too little too late after bad previous finals, allowing Neil to wrap up the 2WD championship. This was Neil’s 18th national title – a quite incredible achievement. Finishing second to Neil was Darren, just beating Lee into third on countback.
For the 4WD event on Sunday, thankfully the rain had disappeared to allow the racers to enjoy a dry days racing to finish the year. Lee Martin (Tamiya) dominated qualifying to take pole position ahead of Neil Cragg (Associated) and Darren Bloomfield (Losi). In the finals, Lee took a relatively easy win ahead of Neil with Darren in third – the same positions as they qualified. Neil already had the title sewn up coming into the meeting and it was Lee that secured the runner-up spot this time ahead of Darren in third.
